  2. Michigan State Board of Education Positive Behavior Support Policy …it is the policy of the State Board of Education that each school district in Michigan implement a system of school-wide positive behavior support strategies. Adopted September 12, 2006

  3. Research Supporting Reading and Behavior Support • Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support leads to increased academic engaged time and enhanced academic outcomes (K. Algozzine & Algozzine, 2007; Horner et al., 2009; Lassen, Steele, & Sailor, 2006). • High quality academic instruction reduces problem behavior (Filter & Horner, 2009; Preciado, Horner, Scott, & Baker, 2009) • Academic deficits remediated in kindergarten reduce risk of developing chronic problem behavior (McIntosh, Sadler, & Brown, 2010).

  4. What does MiBLSi do? • We provide: • Training for school leadership teams and principals to implement school wide reading and behavior support • Training for general and special education teachers on research based interventions • Coaching and coaching training to support school and district implementation • Systems to support data based decision making • State wide professional learning communities and technical assistance

MiBLSi Project Expectations • Collect information on Discipline and Reading • SWIS, DIBELS, PBS Surveys, etc. • Share information with MiBLSi project staff • School leadership team participate in MiBLSi training • Principal involvement in MiBLSi training • School leadership team regular meeting outside of training focusing on behavior/reading support • Coaches meet with school leadership teams/ principal at least monthly • Grade level team meetings

Phases of Implementation over 3 year period Phase I:Building schoolwide foundations • Strengthening the core programs provided to all students with a goal of prevention of behavior or reading problems. (8 training sessions) Phase II:Developing a multi-tiered system of support for students in both reading and behavior. • As the significance of student need increases, the intensity of support also increases. (8 training sessions) Phase III:Developing a responsive system of ongoing evaluation and support • Use data to continuously advancing student outcomes by improving support structures and activities (3 data review/planning sessions)

Intensive Intervention • Individualized, functional assessment based behavior support plan • Universal Prevention • Identify expectations • Teach • Monitor • Acknowledge • Correct • Targeted Intervention • Check-in, Checkout • Social skills training • Mentoring • Organizational skills • Self-monitoring Examples of Behavior Supports Continuum of Supports

  8. West Survey Celebrations … we do have some consistent behavior expectations posted around in the building. Priority Areas for PBS self assessment building survey … Top 3 Priorities School Wide (1, 2, 14, 16) Teaching expectations (always on-going) It takes 7 times hearing something for it to sink in. TEAM Effort (16) All staff are involved directly and/or indirectly in school wide interventions Reward the positive/Acknowledge correct behavior (3,4,7,9 16) Acknowledge with something tangible Be a Bucket Filler  Research shows to undo on negative you need to provide 5 positives.
