Direct Variation The variables x and y vary directly if for a constant k, y = k· x where k ≠ 0 - k is called the constant of variation - k is always a number!!! - k is also known as the slope - Graph!!! Example: Find an equation (y = k· x) that relates x and y such that x and y vary directly, and y = 4 when x = 2.

  3. Inverse Variation The variables x and y vary inversely if for a constant k, y = k/x where k ≠ 0 - Graph!!! Example: Find an equation that relates x and y such that x and y vary inversely, and y = 4 when x = 2.

  4. Try these: 1. Suppose y = 6 and x = 2. Find an equation that relates x and y such that: (a) x and y vary directly (b) x and y vary inversely

  5. Variation models in real-life: Direct, Inverse or Neither??? 1. The area B of the base and the height h of a prism with a volume of 10 cubic units are related by the equation B· h = 10. 2. The mass m and the volume V of a substance are related by the equation 2· V= m, where 2 is the density of the substance.
