  2. What is it • Learning strategy that is used to promote inquiry, obtain understanding and mastery of new information.

  3. When to use it • Use when a student is confronted with new information in school settings or in every day life.

  4. Why is it important • Promotes curiosity and learning. • To connect prior knowledge with material in the text. • To understand and master new material better. • To clarify new ideas or concepts.

  5. Increases understanding of a text • Promotes active readers • Promotes critical thinking • Increases motivation by making the learner an active member of the learning process • Students become aware of what and how they learn

  6. How to use it • Think about questions. • Students ask themselves questions about the new topic before reading. • Ask questions aloud. • Write questions. • During reading they answer questions that might be formulated and create additional questions. • After reading students ask themselves how they feel about the text and what else they would like to learn about the topic.

Before the reading • Look at the title of the book • Look at the pictures on the cover • Create questions • Why is the title of the story “Kangaroo”? • What will it talk about? • What does the picture in the cover tells me about the story? • What do I know about kangaroos? • Where do kangaroos live?

Questions during reading • How did the baby kangaroo travel with his mom? • The baby kangaroo travel with his mother in her pouch • What happened to the baby kangaroo? • He fell on his head when his mother jump. • How did the baby kangaroo feel after falling? • He was afraid. • What did the mother kangaroo fell after her baby fell the second time? • She was sad and upset that her baby kept falling

Questions during reading • What was the owl’s advice? • The owl told the mother kangaroo that she needed a seat belt. • Why the owl recommended a seat belt? • He said that it will help the baby kangaroo to stay in the pouch and not fall. • Who made the seat belt? • The mother kangaroo did the sit belt with branches and leaves. • How did the sit belt help the baby kangaroo? • It did not let the baby fall on the floor • Why is the baby kangaroo happy? • Because with the seat bell he feels safe and do not fall

Questions after the reading • Why did the baby kangaroo was happy to wear a seat belt? • Because he did not fell and hit his head any more. • What is a pouch? • Something similar to a bag that female kangaroos have and in which their young grow after they are born. In the pouch the baby has food, shelter and warm to help him grow. • Why do we have to wear sit belts? • We have to wear sit belts so that we do not hurt ourselves and we do not fall. • What do I feel when I read this story? • I feel happy for the baby kangaroo because he will not fall again. • What did I learn from the story? • I learn to ask for help when I need it, and to listen to other people’s advice.

  12. Conclusion • Self questioning helps students develop critical thinking skills, obtain a better understanding of the text and makes them active members of the learning process.
