  7. Decline? • The heyday of the fifties when whole towns would decamp to the Fylde Coast for a fortnight at a time is now long gone. A generation of steady decline saw visitor numbers fall from 16 million per year in 1972 to just 11 million in 1999. This has hit the tourist industry, and therefore the town as a whole, hard. The number of hotels in Blackpool’s main holiday area has declined by over a third (from 2800 to 1750 between 1989 and 1999).
