  5. Yes, it’s safe to donate blood. No, it doesn’t hurt.   6. Lifeblood Non-profit organization (501(c)3) The only local volunteer blood bank Affiliated with other community blood centers through a national association (www.americasblood.org) Six donor centers; eight mobile units 150 employees $25 million annual revenue

  7. Who needs blood? The “Usual Suspects” Trauma patients: can require 50 or more units Cancer patients: as few as 2, as many as 200 Sickle Cell patients: up to 4 units per month for life And more... Premature infants Knee, hip and shoulder replacement patients Organ transplant recipients Burn victims Patients with low hemoglobin from common causes, like stomach ulcers or hemorrhoids.

  8. Who can donate blood? Must be 16 years old with parental consent, or 17 on your own Weigh at least 115 pounds Be in general good health

  9. Why is it crucial to have African American Donors? Research shows African Americans possess rare blood traits Types O and B are needed most in our community Approximately half of our community’s population is African American and it is vital that they are blood donors Sickle Cell patients need up to 4 units of blood per month for life Since October 2012, Lifeblood has had 9200 African American donors

  10. African American Donations by Numbers In 2012, Lifeblood saw a 30% increase in African American donations over FY11 In the first quarter of FY13, there has been an 8% increase (or 3,383) in African American donors over last year

  11. I don’t donate blood because… • I’m afraid of needles • I gave already • I’m on medication • I’m diabetic • I have high BP • I don’t have enough time • I’m too old • Someone else will do it • I had cancer • You don’t want my blood

  12. African Americans don’t donate because…Myth: Very Superstitious Tuskegee Experiment Distrust of clinical trials Distrust of healthcare system

Lifeblood’s African American Donor Advisory Council A 15 member council comprised of a diverse group of individuals who can use their spheres of influence to increase awareness and the importance of blood donations Members consist of community leaders, corporate, faith, non-profit, education, health and the community at large Meetings are once per quarter Goal is to increase donations Status African American donations report Recognition of volunteers via media meetings, etc. Provides spokespersons to promote Lifeblood’s connection and purpose with the community

  24. Minority Donation Awareness Campaign at Hartford Hospital Hartford, CT

  25. Goals • Increase awareness of the need for organ donation in minority communities within the hospital • Increase the number of minority registered donors

  26. Key Strategies Utilize key hospital champions to spread key messages Focus on many cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds and unite them with the donation message

  27. Action Items • First year, create large poster/mural in main lobby featuring hospital staff and “Why they are donors” • Following years, use the same staff photos/quotes and create images for computer monitors/television screens throughout hospital
