Mughul India • Powerful state under Akbar, weakened by descendants (Jahan and Aurangzeb) • British East India Company and French India Company duel for commercial hegemony—Britain emerges triumphant by 1763. • Dual Control from 1773 to 1857 (Br. Plus East India Company) • Control extended through Doctrine of Lapse • Indian Civil Service Begins

  3. Sepoy Mutiny--1857 • Gun cartridges offend Hindus and Muslims. • Rebellion was brutally suppressed. • British government assumes full control of Indian Affairs • India now a British Vice-Royalty

Indian National Congress • Began to demand more self-rule in 1892 • Divided between the Garam Dal (Hot Faction) who wanted independence and the Naram Dal (Soft Faction), who advocated dominion status. • Britain's need for Indian soldiers strengthened INC’s position. • 1906-Mulsim League Established • 1916--Lucknow Pact. The Congress and the League unite in demand for greater self-government. It is denied by the British.
