    2. -Being a gentle walk through some recent practical experience in EMC and Safety Cases for new vehicles on Network Rail lines

    3. Conducted interference A matter of limits. DC and reed track circuits ( and 50 Hz ) still the most contentious. Basically modern trains much less noisy But difficult to prove credible fault probabilities adequately low Monitoring still needed Despite a variety of techniques, the existing background is still a problem.

    4. DC case (Class 321)

    5. Reed Case (Class 321)

    6. Induced Interference Getting better but STILL no cigar Modern EMU much quieter in psophometric and reed FDM but peaks in high audio. Vl/Vt probably no longer a problem BUT SSI

    7. Spectrum of Modern IGBT EMU

    8. compared with existing EMU

    9. Maintaining the Compatibility.. Most certification relates to equipment that doesnt get touched but trains get routinely dismantled Suppression components carrying power may wear How long do RF gaskets last? Do we have to have a routine test?

    10. RFI With regard to radio interference: The neighbours are not happy The RA is not happy but how realistic is it to reduce the limits? In fact, calculation shows that the actual emissions of a well-engineered modern train are about the minimum sensitivity levels of (e.g) Tetra receivers.

    11. EMC Legislation (the lore and the profits) In safety cases, compliance with En50121 et al is frequently used to close hazards. This does not of itself require certification.

    12. Products must be CE marked but The standard for railways is not ratified so you need to test AND have a TCF AND have it signed by a Competent Body

    13. A train is not a product (is it?)but GE/RT 8015 requires compliance with EN 50121 People like LUL, CTRL still need to see a piece of paper (if its not their train) so you STILL need to test AND have a TCF and have it signed by a Competent Body

    14. None of this gets you out of doing a Safety Case!
