  1. Household Green Plug Presented by: René Rioux Advisor: Dr. A. M. Sharaf November 30, 2004

  2. Summary • Description/Background • Methodology • Work Completed • Work Remaining René Rioux

  3. Description of Green Plug “GREEN POWER” GP: Modulated/Switched Dynamic Filter/Compensator (MSDFC) for Electrical Energy Efficiency/Savings and Power Quality Enhancement delivered to a home The Green Plug is is a member of a family of Energy Misers/Economizers and Capacitor Compensator developed by Dr. A.M. Sharaf René Rioux

  4. Background • The filter uses work done by Pierre Kreidi, MScEE, and Dr. Sharaf for modeling of nonlinear loads and switching circuits • Can be used to improve Power Factor, Power Quality, Reduce Harmonics of Residential, Commercial Loads • Can reduce Electrical Energy Consumption KWh, for cyclical Inrush type loads René Rioux

  5. Methodology • Two phase three wire, 2Φ-3W • Modeling a house on Simulink/Matlab from a perspective point of view of the transformer René Rioux

  6. Methodology Equivalent Circuit René Rioux

  7. Three Basic Designs of the household Green Plug Triac zero voltage or non-zero voltage trigger Developed by Dr. Sharaf (Patent Pending) René Rioux

  8. Work Completed Fig 1: Neutral Current; Balanced Load Case René Rioux

  9. Work Completed Fig 2: Neutral Voltage; Balanced Load Case René Rioux

  10. Work Completed Fig 3: Neutral Current; Slight Imbalanced Load Case René Rioux

  11. Work Completed Fig 4: Neutral Voltage; Slight Imbalanced Load Case René Rioux

  12. Work Completed Fig 5: Neutral Current; Complete Imbalanced Load Case René Rioux

  13. Work Completed Fig 6: Neutral Voltage; Complete Imbalanced Load Case René Rioux

  14. Work Remaining • Model the Green Plug on matlab • Triac • 2-pulse diode • Mosfet PWM • Capacitor size • Design Specifications for Scheme 1, 2, & 3 • Load of home Average (region, heating,…) • Amperage 100A, 200A, Service Entrance • Design Space • Comparison of the three GP models René Rioux

  15. Work Remaining • Study Dynamic Performance • Energy Savings • Power Quality, Factor • Utilization • Harmonics disturbance • Study Imbalanced & Fault condition, short 1 phase, voltage excursions (±10%), and load excursions (±50%) René Rioux

  16. Work Remaining • Final Design selection for the Green Plug • Build a low cost prototype Verify, & Test • Laboratory testing of Energy Savings and Power Quality Enhancement • Household Testing (with help from NBEPC) René Rioux
