  4. Introducing Close to 1,000 Let’s try playing a round of Close to 1,000 together. All you need is a close to 1,000 recording sheet for each player and one set of Digit Cards. You will start the game by dealing EIGHT digit cards to EACH player. The goal is to arrange six of these cards to make two 3-digit numbers that have a SUM close to 1,000. Let’s take a look a the cards for our first round.

  5. Introducing Close to 1,000 Using these eight cards, what are some 3 digit numbers you could make? Now, what two 3-digit numbers can you make that, when added together, will get you as close to 1,000 as possible? The best choice would be two numbers that add to exactly 1,000. If you can’t make 1,000 exactly, they try to make numbers with a sum that is either a little less or a little more than 1,000.

  6. Introducing Close to 1,000 Collect a variety of solutions and write each one as an equation. Below are some examples: 657+342=999 478+523=1,001 675+325=1,000 1 point 1 point 0 points Which is the closest to 1,000? How far away is each one? For scoring, we’re going to use the DIFFERENCE between our sum and 1,000, no matter whether the sum is higher of lower. We won’t be scoring with positive of negative numbers, at least not now. Some of you may want to try that later.

  7. Introducing Close to 1,000 Collect a variety of solutions and write each one as an equation. Below are some examples: 657+342=999 478+523=1,001 675+325=1,000 1 point 1 point 0 points When you’re playing the game, after you’ve used six of the cards, they go in the DISCARD pile. You’ll keep the two cards you didn’t use and draw six new ones. The game ends when you and your partner have each played FIVE rounds and totaled your score. The person with the LOWEST score wins.

  9. Discussion: Strategies for Close to 1,000 What’s the first thing you do when you look at your digit cards? Are there particular combinations you look for?
