  2. Personal Reign • Ruled Spain • 1556 Crowned King of Spain. • 1598 Philip of Spain died, September 13th. 

  3. Major Accomplishments • He was certain that every one has to be the same religion to support of authority of the government. • 1569 King Philip II formed an inquisition in South America.

  4. Major Accomplishments • 1581 Philip II, King of Spain, becomes King of Portugal.

  5. Spanish Armada • Philip the Second sent the Armada to England to stop the spread of Protestantism. • Elizabeth the First of England led a powerful Protestant country.

  6. Wars • 1571 Spanish navy destroys Turkish navy in the Mediterranean` • 1588 August 8: The Spanish Armada of 132 ships is defeated by the English fleet of  34 ships and 163 armed merchant vessels under Lord Howard of Effingham, Sir Francis Drake, and Sir John Hawkins ( war between Spain and England continues until 1603 )

  7. Religion • Philip II generally believed that what was good for Spain was good for the Catholic Church. • He looked on the pope as the spiritual head of the Catholic Church but he did not commit himself to the decisions of Rome when they conflicted with his own beliefs.

  8. Family • In 1543 he had been married to his cousin Mary of Portugal, who bore him a son, the unhappy Don Carlos who died in 1545. • Philip later married Mary of England.

  9. Death & Legacy • 1598 he died piously. • He legacy was sending the Armada to its end. • One reason for the Armada’s defeat was the weather. • Under Philip II Spain reached the height of its power but also met its downfall. His wars were large in scope and complexity. In spite of the great and increasing quantities of gold and silver going to Spain from the American mines, Spain decreased in world power under his reign.

  10. Other • 1569 King Philip II forms an inquisition in South America • Under the weak leadership of his successors the Spanish ship of state would drift towards disaster. Yet such was the strength of the system he and his father had built that this did not start to become clearly apparent until a generation after his death.
