Population Densities New York State’s population is almost 19.4 million people – ranked number 3 in the country behind California and Texas New York City houses almost half of that with a population of almost 8.1 million residents. New York City is by far the most populous city in the country. The next largest city is Los Angeles with 3.8 million people. Tennessee’s largest city is Memphis with 676 thousand inhabitants The next largest city in New York State is Buffalo with 261 thousand residents. In comparison Knoxville has 185 thousand residents

  4. State Capital building Albany is the state capital because it was the location of the first Dutch settlement in New York – Fort Orange Almost 98 thousand people live in Albany Albany is located close to the eastern border almost in the middle of the state
