  1. Trashketball 3 Figurative Language

  2. Rules of Trashketball • Stay in your seats at all times. • You will have 30-60 seconds to discuss the answer to a question AND • Write ONE response to the question on a sheet of paper. • All teams will hold up their answers. • If you are correct, your team will get the opportunity to shoot the correct response into the trashcan from a 1, 2, or 3 point line. • If the shot is made, the team gets extra-credit. • Shots will be made after ALL the questions have been answered.

  3. 1 The soul selects her own society,Then shuts the door;On her divine majorityObtrude no more.

  4. Answer Personification: The soul is given the ability to select societies and shut doors.

  5. 2 You say that you are wronged--ah, well,I count that friendship poor, at bestA bauble, a mere bagatelle,That cannot stand so slight a test.

  6. Answer Metaphor: He compares the friendship to a bauble or bagatelle, a cheap trinket.

  7. 3 The terrier, down on the hearth,Twitches and barks in his sleep,Soft little foolish barks,More like a dream than a dog . . .

  8. Answer Simile: The dog is compared to a dream using the word “like.”

  9. 4 Gazing at the apexstar configurationsred picnic blanketthe endless summer.

  10. Answer Hyperbole: The summer is described as endless, which is an exaggeration.

  11. 5 Nor will a brave man choose to live when he,Full deeply drunk of life, has reached the dregs.

  12. Answer Metaphor: life is compared to a drink. The end of life is compared to the end of a drink, one with food particles in the bottom.

  13. 6 As a white candleIn a holy place,So is the beautyOf an aged face.

  14. Answer Simile: an aged face was compared to a white candle using the word “as.”

  15. 7 Gossiping on the country-side,Spring and the wandering breezes say,God has thrown Heaven open wideAnd let the thrushes out to-day.

  16. Answer Personification: Spring and the wandering breezes are given the ability to talk.

  17. 8 Taking daughter’s boyfriend hostage may have been a bit extreme, But other fathers have done worse things when their daughters were sixteen.

  18. Answer Understatement: Taking one’s daughter’s boyfriend hostage is more than “a bit” extreme.

  19. 9 Beautiful lie the dead;Like ships, the anchor dropped,In a deep water.

  20. Answer Simile: The dead are compared to ships with anchors dropped.

  21. 10 I heard a cry in the night,A thousand miles it came,It was quiet then it was louder,My name, my name, my name…

  22. Answer Hyperbole: The speaker is exaggerating how loud the call was.
