  1. THORPEX Lydia Dumenil-Gates Program Director National Science Foundation Climate and Large-scale Dynamics Program

  2. THORPEX NSF Geosciences Directorate Division of Atmospheric Sciences Individual Programs The Climate Dynamics and Large-scale Dynamics Programs were merged at the beginning of Fiscal Year 05.

  3. THORPEX • THORPEX is showing that it will become a landmark project for operations and research • THORPEX addresses fundamental research issues that are relevant to NSF Programs • THORPEX covers the U.S. and international interests in developing an observing system that serves societal benefits such as severe weather, air quality, prevention of disasters

  4. THORPEX • There are two avenues for NSF funding of THORPEX research topics • In the short term: individual proposals of average demand of CLD and deployment pool on an annual, competitive basis (unsolicited) • In the longer term: development of a budgetary strategy for exceptional, well-coordinated demands on the programs and the deployment pool

  5. THORPEX • NSF will consider funding of selected contributions to the THORPEX implementation strategy, but will not be able to earmark large sums or have special announcements • All proposals will be evaluated according to NSF’s review criteria of Intellectual merit and Broader impacts

  6. THORPEX • NSF has developed a new process for the review of research proposals and facility requests associated with research that requires field campaigns. This new process will significantly increase the time between the submission of required documents, research proposals and facility requests and the start date of any field work. There are significant changes to the format of some of these documents.

  7. THORPEX • ….for any field campaign planned to occur during 2008 investigators will be required to submit comprehensive documents that describe the Program Science and Program Experimental Design by January of 2006.
