  3. I’ve got the theories behind things…I’ve got a better understanding and I’ve taken that into practice • I’ve gained most from theories…I’ve got experience of the work and now I understand it in a different way • I think differently about the work. It’s given me the ability to step back and watch what’s going on, say, within a group setting. So when we’re talking I can be watching and thinking at the same time and questioning myself… • It’s changed my entire way of looking • I approached work in a more professional way. From the theory I see the behaviour not just of one person, I’ve had my attitude to the work heightened

  4. ‘Good practitioners’ had an enormously complex and highly personal knowledge base, constructed from experience but used in a fairly intuitive way. Many traces of discipline-based knowledge could be found but not in their original form. Moreover, much of this complex knowledge base was tacit rather than explicit, so that practitioners could not readily articulate what they did or how they did it (Eraut, 1997: p38)

  5. I could see that’s what I actually do…I could say ‘Oh, so that’s what it’s called!’ Terminology. It’s affected how I think. It’s given me confidence in team meetings, a more professional edge • I’m really pleased with the confidence it’s given me. It shows in the way I approach staff in briefing and team meetings • I used to be a lot quieter at work, now I say a lot more. I feel I have the confidence to say and contribute more • It’s subtle changes, reinforcing what I’m doing, giving depth and a bit more knowledge

  6. Seeing a personal insight stated as a theoretical proposition makes us more likely to take seriously our own reasoning and judgements. This does wonders for our morale and self confidence. It strengthens our ability to state clearly the rationale informing our actions (Brookfield, 1998: p137)

  7. However, three of us have noticed a change in our thoughts, attitudes and actions • I’m not quite the same…this doesn’t just affect your work it affects your life • I’m now a more reflective practitioner. I know how and why. My line manager has noticed
