  2. Session 2: the presentation Objective: we’ll explain how to get started Structure: • What does it mean to be a trainer? • Finding out what you need to know • Organizing your presentation • Developing your presentation • Which lingo to use?

  3. 1. What does it mean to be a trainer? • Goal: to increase knowledge and skills of participants or change behaviour • Profile: • Public speaker • Conveyer of information • Moderator of discussion • Your exact role needs to be determined: information is the key to success

Organizing your presentation • Selecting materialsand what not to use • Choosing the structure of your presentation: problem/solution; past/present/future; cause/effect; theory/practice; divide a quote or a word; your own topic pattern • Length and timing: deciding which points to include • Cut, cut, cut, but never cut the conclusion

  5. Take your time to prepare! if you have never prepared/given a presentation: count 1 full working day per hour of presentation

  7. A. Structure Getting the message across -> clear structure of your presentation necessary Main points / minor points / order of presentation to be determined in advance Outline and / or presentation slides help

  8. B. Introduction: general • Setting the scene • Powerful, witty, link to news, catching the interest of the audience… • “Did you ever see a slide with too little information on it?” • Max. 2 minutes

  9. Introduction: parts • Draw attention • Introduce yourself • Introduce theme • Importance for public • Sketch topics to be treated • Time (total, break) • Handouts • Questions (any time, at the end)

  15. 2. Why use them? • One picture or diagram > 1000 words • Clarity • Attention • Lively • Remember

  17. 4. How to use them? • Don not just read slides; ilustrate and add examples • Flip chart: write clear (this trainer...) • Video: do not use too long • Testing, testing: is everything functioning as it should • Preparing notes, hand-outs, slides etc.

  18. Slides / sheets • Support presentations • Less is more: Not too many slides: 1 slide is 3 minutes: max 20! 6x6 rule: 6 words on a line, 6 lines • NOT ONLY CAPITALS or too much !!!!!!!! • Never full sentences • Use pictures, diagrams or graphs and colors • Check spelling

  19. Slides / sheets: • Graphics, charts, pictures etc. OK but…. (dont overdo) • No small (small) print • Sensible use of colours OK • Text dark, not yellow etc. because not easy to read • Colourblindness widespread, no green / red combinations

  20. Conclusions • Presenting is not so easy: try it and learn by doing • Good experts can be bad presenters/trainers(think of some University professors)
