Job 1:9-11 • 9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? 10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

  3. God Reduces the Hedge • Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. Him His House All He Hath

Hedge • God again calls Job righteous 2:3 • The devil accuses him again 2:4-5 • Satan was restricted from the real testing • The health of man keeps him acting righteous • The hedge is reduced again (life) 2:6 • In Job’s sorrow, this same hedge is viewed as a barrier to his goal of death 3:20-23

Place of Blessings • Is our house built on the rock (God) • Or the sand of blessings given and kept • Family, finances, and health • Storms will come upon these blessings • Blessings: appreciated (Source) 1:21, 2:10 • shared, properly used (ch. 31) • Never a condition of our faith 1:9-10 • Never be a weakening influence • Never viewed as a curse

Hedges We Have • Limits to temptations: 1 Cor. 10:13 • Bible: Ps. 119:36-37 • Church (our congregation) • Is this blessing appreciated (Source) • Do we share this blessing (Working) • Is it a condition of our faith (faithful as long as church is good, sound, supportive…) • Is the church a weakening influence • Is it considered to be a curse to us

  8. Our Perspective • Hedge to protect or prohibit: 2:6, 3:23 • Church (hedge to protect us) • Hedge around vineyard Isa. 5:1-7 • Keep good in Heb. 10:24 • Keep evil out (pure) • Concerned about gaps in the walls • Eccl. 10:8 bit by serpent • Ezek. 13:3-5, 22:30 • Worship, Truth, Edify, Love…

  9. Our Perspective • Church is seen as a prison by some • Elders are the guards • Members are fellow inmates • Lam. 3:7-9 (sorrows overwhelm) • Obstacle to improper desires Hos. 2:5-6 • Must attend, can’t divorce, must give…

  10. Rejoice at Trials • God knows we have the strength to endure the trials 1 Cor. 10:13 • We learn we have the strength to handle the challenges of life • The devil is threatened by our ability to cope with the temptations of life Jms. 4:7 • Others are inspired to righteousness
