What Is A Refugee?? • Refugee: “any person who, owing to a well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his/her nationality and is unable, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself/herself of the protection of that country.” - PDF: “Refugees- who they are and where they come from”

Refugees Migrants Refugees • Choose to leave homeland • Can take possessions • Time to prepare emotionally and physically, and time to say goodbye • Take their documents (ex. Passports, birth certificates, etc.) • Normally emigrate with families • Can return home • Well prepared and motivated to move • Less likely to encounter negative attitudes towards new country • Don’t choose to leave homeland- flee • Almost every possession left behind • Unprepared emotionally and physically- can’t say goodbye • No documents handy • Leave families behind • Know they most likely can’t return home • Traumatized at the move • May experience prejudice and negative attitudes

Refugees “Eligible” to Move to U.S. • 1.“You are unable or unwilling to return to your home country because you have been persecuted there in the past or have a well-founded fear that you will be persecuted if you go back.” • 2.“The reason you have been (or will be) persecuted is connected to one of five things: your race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or your political opinion.” -Legal Encyclopedia- “Refugee Status”
