  1. Refugees in the News Can I analyse news articles to evaluate how writers use language to represent refugees and asylum seekers? What’s the difference between a fact and an opinion? Discuss your ideas in your group.

  2. In your group, read through the articles you’ve been given. Underline any facts and circle any opinions. How does the writer use facts and opinions to put across their message?

  3. What do the writers of these articles want their readers to think about refugees? How do they use language to communicate their point of view?

  4. Explain and comment on the writers’ use of language, including grammatical and literary features at word and sentence level Advanced: explain in detail, using appropriate terminology, how language is used. Draw together your comments about how the writer’s choice of language creates an effect on the reader. Developing: identify various features of the writer’s use of language and begin to explain them. Comment on the effect of the writer’s choice of language on the reader. Beginning: identify some basic features of the writer’s use of language. Make some simple comments about the writer’s choice of language.

  5. Identify and comment on a writer’s purpose and viewpoint, and the overall effect of the text on the reader. Advanced: locate evidence for the writer’s purpose through particular words or sentences, and use this to explain the viewpoint of the writer. Clearly explain the effect the text might have on the reader. Developing: Identify the main purpose of the writer, and begin to explain the writer’s viewpoint. Begin to explain the possible effects of the text on the reader. Beginning: identify the writer’s main purpose, with simple comments showing that you understand the writer’s viewpoint. Make simple comments about how the reader may respond.

  6. What does the writer of the article want their readers to think about refugees? How do they use language to communicate their point of view? • Choose an article to annotate, picking out key quotations which show the writers’ point of view • Write a brief introduction to sum up the points of view expressed in the article • Use PEE+e to explain your ideas in depth about how the writer uses language to communicate their viewpoint • Finish with a conclusion which explores how readers might respond to the points of view expressed in the article
