  1. Analysis and Information (A&I) Online A Web-based Focus on Safety www.ai.volpe.dot.gov

  2. What Is A&I? • A web-based system furnishing useful motor carrier safety information over the Internet at the click of a button • Improved communication with FMCSA employees, the motor carrier industry, shippers, insurers, and other agencies. • A system designed to promote motor carrier self-improvement

  3. Why Did We Develop A&I? FMCSA’s Objective… • Meeting DOT’s ambitious goal of a 50% reduction in large truck-related fatalities by 2010 requires dramatic, innovative solutions • To help trucking companies help themselves; and to give enforcement officials and others the tools to monitor carrier safety performance

  4. Bridging the Gap To reach that goal… • We needed to bridge the gap between the tremendous volume and variety of safety data and the end users who can benefit from its analysis • A&I converts raw safety data into usable information, organized for efficient delivery and meaningful use

  5. Information at Your Fingertips A&I provides… • Comparative analysis, summary reports, and State and National rankings derived from multiple data sources (FARS, MCMIS) • Consistent national snapshots using specific time frames which highlight the historical perspective and reveal trends

  6. SafeStat Online

  7. SafeStat Online SafeStat is a process that measures the relative safety performance and compliance of individual motor carriers in 4 Safety Evaluation Areas: Accident, Driver, Vehicle, and Safety Management.

  8. 1. Motor Carrier Safety Data Compliance Reviews Crashes Moving Violations Roadside Inspections Carrier Registration Closed Enforcement Cases 2. Algorithm Calculates Safety Status of Carrier 3. Individual carrier results available on A&I Online. SafeStat Score Calculation

  9. How can I use SafeStat? • Retrieve state-by-state lists of carriers prioritized for CRs • Obtain safety information about thousands of commercial truck and bus companies

  10. Crash Profiles Online

  11. Crash Profiles Online Provides summarized crash statistics for large trucks and buses involved in fatal and non-fatal crashes in the U. S. – for each state and the nation – to help identify safety problems

  12. Crash Profiles Online • One of 40+ Crash Profile reports available. • Reports for 1996 – 2000 are available on both National and individual state levels.

  13. How can I use Crash Profiles? • Compare state crash statistics to national crash figures. • Identify truck-related safety problems in specific geographical areas

  14. Program Measures

  15. Program Measures • Summary statistics for three FMCSA safety programs: Compliance Reviews, Roadside Inspections, and Traffic Enforcement stops of CMVs. • A fourth module, Program Effectiveness measures the effectiveness of these programs in terms of reducing the number and severity of crashes.

  16. Program Measures Sample Report

  17. How can I use Program Measures? Obtain safety information on 3 FMCSA safety programs: Compliance Reviews, Roadside Inspections, and Traffic Enforcement

  18. Current Analysis Results

  19. Current Analysis Results • Learn how effective FMCSA’s safety programs are in reducing crashes • Become familiar with current and completed research conducted at the FMCSA • Read and comment on our research into the safety performance of new motor carriers.

  20. How can I use Current Analysis Results? Access a wide collection of recent studies on truck and bus safety

  21. A&I Development Approach

  22. A&I Development Methods • Internet technologies allowed us to use a 3 stage development cycle: mock-up, prototype, operational system • Short, iterative, “design–develop–review” steps allowed us to move quickly from concept to working product • New functions and capabilities are quickly implemented because of the efficiency of this technique

  23. Improved Communications… • An online feedback system is constantly monitored with a goal of 1 day response • User feedback helps define new enhancements and features creating a partnership with our users • True public-private partnership fosters a unique sense of involvement and generates good will and trust

  24. Focus on User Needs • Work at making the site intuitive and easy to use • Present valuable information in an easy to access manner • Provide support information—contacts, related sites, etc. • Keep content current – Monthly updates

  25. The Result is Increased Safety! • As more users understand how the data is being used, the quality of the data improves and this leads to increased use, driving further improvement • The more users are involved in the process, they better they understand it, and increased safety is the result

  26. A&I is Meeting Needs… • Currently logging 40,000+ unique site visits per month (not page hits…)

  27. Customer Feedback • "This site is extremely helpful. For quite some time it was very difficult for a motor carrier to know how they were rated in the DOT's eyes. Now, with the help of this website, we can see how we're doing and focus our efforts to insure that we maintain a solid safety standing."--Compliance Supervisor • "Thank you for the tremendous efforts. Finally, carriers can access important safety performance information to monitor and improve their safety management systems"---Risk Engineer

  28. Customer Feedback • “The module with state maps showing crash location data by county is impressive and will be very useful to divisions and states in developing strategic plans. Many thanks and a tip of the old Stetson…”—B. Kelleher FMCSA Utah State Director • “This is an excellent program. It will save lives.” —Owner, trucking company • "Excellent site to help establish safety programs for trucking companies.“—Great West Casualty Co. Safety Service Representative
