French Revolution • In 1789 the people of France revolted against the Monarchy. • In 1793 the Jacobins seized power • When the Jacobins seized power they began the reign of terror where they executed the aristocratic elite. • They then declared war on other monarchies such as England • America decided to stay neutral

  3. The 4* Treaties • Spain: San Lorenzo • British: Jay’s Treaty • Native Americans: Greenville • French: XYZ affair*

The XYZ affair • After making a treaty with Spain and England, America tried to make a Treaty with France • France, upset by lack of American support and Jay’s Treaty sent 3 low level officials to meet the American diplomats • They demanded a bribe of $250,000 and a loan of $1 million to see Prime Minister Tallyrand

  5. Alien and Sedition Acts • Naturalization Act • Alien Friends Act • Alien Enemies Act • Sedition Act • Seizing an opportunity created by the XYZ affair the Federalists under the control of Adams and Hamilton created a series of 4 acts to protect their power and control of the Federal Gov

  6. Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions • Upset by the the Alien and Sedition Acts Democrat Republicans like Jefferson and Madison put the new Acts to the test • Many wrote scathing articles about the Pres and current government for what they saw as an abuse of power • Madison and Jefferson created the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions in which they called for nullification • Nullification: right of states to nullify laws they determine to be unconstitutional
