WG1 Summary

This summary outlines our goal to address the inconsistency of humidity datasets on a global scale, identified as a key challenge in climate data analysis. We aim to improve data access, sharing, and quality control through intercomparison studies and collaboration with existing databases (NDSC, GAW, WOUDC). Key activities include operational and research radiosonde programs, satellite intercomparisons, and calibration standards. Our efforts will culminate in a special issue, focusing on the significance of accurate upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) measurements. For further details, contact Marion Mueller.

  1. WG1Summary

  2. Our Role / our Goal • O3 rather well covered by existing databases (NDSC, GAW, WOUDC) • Inconsistency of humidity data sets most prominent issue on global scalefocus on this • Required simultaneous temperature for conversion of absolute / relative humidity

  3. Data Access / Exchange / Sharing • Data leaflet for the Actions internal use(Marion Mueller) • What data is there • Contact person • Not secret, but with limited scope, focus on practical information, not in-depth

  4. Quality Control • Intercomparison studies • In situ / 1-on-1 • Satellite as transfer standard • Work out accuracy and relative / mutual bias • Summarize / document by ACP(?) special issue in 2 years

  5. Activities • Radiosonde (operational / research) • Lidar • Operational met. Satellites • Envisat (MIPAS / SCIA) • Champ • In-service aircraft (MOZAIC) • Microwave (uplooking / limb-looking)

  6. Radiosonde Activities • 1-on-1 intercomparison: LAUTLOS(Esko Kyro) • Satellite-based RS station survey(Stefan Buehler / Viju Oommen) • Collect Q.C.’ed high resolution radiosonde data set(Ulrich Leiterer) • Better correction algorithms

  7. Lidar Activities • Very promising, as shown by Brian on Thursday NDSC (Phillippe Keckhut) / EARLINET (Valentin Simeonov) • Calibration standards • Overview at next workshop(Phillipe Keckhut / Marion Mueller) • Satellite intercomparison?(Stefan Buehler) • Other intercomparison activities?

  8. Met. Satellite Activities • 3 year AMSU UTH climatology(Stefan Buehler) • Intercomparison activities with RS, etc.

  9. MIPAS Activities • Select LAUTLOS matches and compare to in-situ sensors(Matthias Milz)

  10. CHAMP Activities • Compare LS temperatures to ECMWF(Torsten Schmidt)

  11. Microwave Activities • Bern aircraft radiometer @ LAUTLOS(Dietrich Feist / Nik Kaempfer) • Report on MARSCHALS data after first test flight?(Victoria Jay)

  12. Time Schedule • Until mid-term workshop:Intercomparison activities • After mid-term workshop:Documentation / publication • Goal: Special Issue at the end of the action

  13. New UTLS Satellite Missions • Should Action make a statement stressing the importance of better measurements of UTH? (Cirrus?) • Invite to next workshop the missions with UTLS focus that are selected in Frascati
