The classes were 45 minutes in duration and were led by Carol Thomas.

  3. PTO Programs • All of the students performed various Christmas songs for the December Festival. They were also invited to share their program at the system wide Christmas event held at the Dublin High School Auditorium. • In February, the kindergarten and 1st graders sang songs about Valentine’s Day and friends. The attendees of the April meeting were treated with the second and third graders sharing their instrumental skills.

  4. PTO Programs • In May, the 4th and 5th graders sang about friends and being change makers for the future. They also used various instruments such as kazoos, boom whackers, keyboard and xylophones in an interesting number called Boompus.

  20. Garden Club • In 1963, Mrs. Donald Ricks had an idea about beautifying the Hillcrest School grounds. She shared this idea with Mrs. W. C. Kalmar. They presented the concept to residents of the Green Acres Subdivision and the Green Acres Garden Club became a reality. Over the years, the club has been instrumental in maintaining the beautiful landscape around the school as well as the courtyard, “Secret Garden”.

  21. Partnership with the LEAP school • At the May 2011 meeting, the garden club members decided to partner with the students at the newly formed charter school at Hillcrest Elementary to form a Junior Garden Club. Throughout the school year selected 5th grade students attended the Green Acres Garden Club monthly meetings, and the school was hostess for the end of the year picnic to express their appreciation to the Garden Club member.

Mrs. Thomas was trained in the summer of 2011 at the weeklong Teacher Conservation Workshop in Mansfield, Georgia on these activities. The students learned to identify the trees on the school campus, counted the rings on a “tree cookie” to determine the age of the tree and dissected owl pellets.
