He does, however question, contradict and malign God. To emphasize the importance of firstly wanting to be obedient to God and secondly using His Word as tools against temptation To recognize that, because Adam and Eve in their innocence could not stand against their temptation, neither can we To understand that we inherited a sin nature from the fall which consists of: Knowledge of good and evil (we will want to act like we are God), Knowledge of self (this will give us concern for self), and Fear of God because of sin (which breeds enmity against God) To convince ourselves that we need the ‘God Factor’ to resist temptation www.sharongospelchapel.org - Lesson 9 - December 11, 2011

With What Was Eve Tempted?--Things of the World 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.   6. 1b. The Temptation of Eve Would She Have Had A Conscience At This Time? As we discussed previously, she knew good and thus she would have known ‘not good’ (i.e. evil). However she wouldn’t have known the consequences of disobedience except by what God and Satan said. The Serpent Two main titles that fit his activity here: Satan The ‘Adversary’ - of God and man (Job 1:6-13; Zech 3:1) Devil - meaning "slanderer" or "false accuser.” In Contrast: 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.   8. 1c. What Was the Role of Satan InThe Temptation Of Adam And Eve? The Serpent Genesis 3:1 “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of ever tree of the garden?” S. The Hebrew text gives you that kind of a tone, is it really true that God has said you shall not eat of any tree of the garden. And this is the most disastrous dialog in human history. And it is initiated by the devil about God and in the third person. I think it is significant that it is in the third person. First person: The use of I, me, my, mine, we and other first-person pronouns Second person: You and your Third person: From the point of view of the outside, looking in: he, she, it “Many discussions about God become discussions about God and the third person. And so, people are talking about God, but who do not have any real personal relationship to him.   9. The Role of Satan In The Temptation Of Adam And Eve Why the Serpent and not Satan? A tool of Satan; God does not want us to have the excuse that ‘Satan made me do it’ if he came personally. Does he come as himself and not in others? How does Satan come? – As an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.) – Satan comes as a past believer in God. He can acknowledge God but won’t give Him glory. Steps Satan used: Questioned the Word of God - Verse 3:1 “Yea, hath God said” (Doesn’t begin with denial of God or what He said). Same method is used by cults Directly contradicted the Word of God - Verse 3:4 “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:” The first lie in the Bible John 8:44 “Ye are of your father the devil, …. for he is a liar, and the father of it.” Maligned God; He wants to with hold something from them -Verse 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. www.sharongospelchapel.org - Lesson 9 - December 11, 2011

  11. 1f. Would Eve Have Fallen to Temptation Without Satan? We can only speculate. I would say yes. Notice what Eve said: Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. There is no reference to God saying that “neither shall ye touch it”. So Eve did not care enough to remember what God said. And she should have remembered since it wasn’t as if it wasn’t that long ago she was told (last time we pointed out that some say hours, some say days, some say up to a month; but certainly not more than a year). Eve did remember generally that there was something about the fruit but not the specifics.   13. 2a.The Temptation of Christ Temptation 1 Matt 4:3 If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. What Kind of Temptation? – Lust of the Flesh (1) Satan tried to get Christ to Question –Distrust in God’s provision and ways, i.e.Unbelief - Notice “If ” – Characteristic of unbelief and Satan’s methods (2) Satisfy desire by using His power Defense – God First then What Does God Say (His Word)? Matt 4:4 It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. 1 Peter 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. www.sharongospelchapel.org - Lesson 9 - December 11, 2011

Temptation 2 Matt 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. What kind of temptation? Again, Satan tried to get Christ to question God and His word – This is the other extreme of unbelief; presuming upon or testing God – not believing Him and that His way is best- ultimately to satisfy pride of life Defense – God First and Then What Does God Say (His Word)? Matt 4:7 It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Ex 17:2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord? Temptation 3 Matt 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. What Temptation? (1) Pride of life Defense – God First and Then What Does God Say (His Word)? Matt 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Temptation 3 Does the end justify the means?Where is our God and faith in the matter? Defense - God First and Then What Does God Say (His Word) ? Matt 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Rom 3:8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. Ex 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.   17. 2e. Temptation of Christ – Was it a Real Temptation? God (Christ) cannot be tempted with evil (James 1:15) so was this a real temptation? The answer is yes – He had to be tempted as we are Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Remember, though, that ‘temptation’ really means ‘testing’. Jesus really was very hungry – just as we are (Matt 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred). So He had a very strong desire (lust) for food. In this respect He was tempted or tested. There is Nothing in Christ Which Responds to Evil Jesus could not be tempted (tested) by evil (James 1:13)– He can only do what is right. Conclusions The Tempation of Adam and Eve Adam and Eve sinned because of the lust of the flesh Satan was involved in the Temptation (questioned, contradicted, maligned God) but they would have fallen anyway The Temptation of Christ Christ was tempted (tried) by Satan’s appeal to the flesh. Satan could find nothing in Christ to tempt Him. Christ resisted temptation because His purpose was to do the Father’s will. He quoted Scripture to Satan to defeat him. Our Temptations We have indwelling sin which has as its roots the principles: 1) we act like gods, 2) we are aware of, and cater to self, and 3) we fear God and thus actively oppose Him and are enemies of God and the law We will sin even as Christians without the ‘God factor’ (Christ living in us, walking in the Spirit, in other words God with us) www.sharongospelchapel.org - Lesson 9 - December 11, 2011
