TEHRAN • December 1943 • First time Stalin, Churchill, and Rooseveltmeet in person • discuss how to create a “lasting peace” after World War II • decide to create a “United Nations” • officially formed 2 years later in S.F • created to replace the failed League of Nations • goal is to prevent war • signed in 1945 by 50 countries • based in New York City
YALTA • February 1945 “Big Three” meet – Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin • Clear that war in Europe was nearly over and the Allies would win • Decisions: • 1. Divide Germany & Berlin into 4 zones (US, Britain, France, USSR) • 2. Stalin promises free elections in Eastern Europe (example: Poland) U.S. USSR Berlin U.S. USSR Britain France Britain France
