Peace Conferences Allies begin to meet BEFORE war ends to determine “peace” CASABLANCA • January 1943 • firstwar conference between Allies • Only FDR & Churchill met (Stalin did not want to leave USSR under Hitler’s siege) • determined the war would only end with an “unconditional surrender” of Axis powers

TEHRAN • December 1943 • First time Stalin, Churchill, and Rooseveltmeet in person • discuss how to create a “lasting peace” after World War II • decide to create a “United Nations” • officially formed 2 years later in S.F • created to replace the failed League of Nations • goal is to prevent war • signed in 1945 by 50 countries • based in New York City

  4. YALTA • February 1945 “Big Three” meet – Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin • Clear that war in Europe was nearly over and the Allies would win • Decisions: • 1. Divide Germany & Berlin into 4 zones (US, Britain, France, USSR) • 2. Stalin promises free elections in Eastern Europe (example: Poland) U.S. USSR Berlin U.S. USSR Britain France Britain France

  5. YALTA continued Decisions Continued: 3. Stalin promises to help fight Japan 4. continued discussion on details of United Nations V-E Day!! May 1945 POTSDAM - July 1945 - Truman, Stalin, & Churchill meet to continue peace talks - Stalin had not allowed any free elections yet - Conflict between Truman and Stalin over reparations - war in Pacific still going on

  6. End of WWII • U.S. Drops Atomic Bombs on Japan • Japan Surrenders – August 14th, 1945 - V-J Day (Victory in Japan Day) - U.S. occupies Japan for 7 years creating a free-market economy and more democratic form of government • Costs of War

Nuremberg Trials - Following the “discovery” of the death camps, Nazi leaders were put on trial for committing war crimes - Over 200 Nazis found guilty – 12 sentenced to deathNote: There were also Tokyo War Crimes Trials to punish Japanese leaders 5. Effects on American Homefront - Economic prosperity - Baby boom - expansion of higher education (G.I. Bill of Rights) - emergence of a more active Civil Rights Movement 6. Effects of American Foreign Policy - U.S. permanently abandons policy of isolationism - U.S. & U.S.S.R emerge as most powerful countries - leads to a competition to become the #1 World Superpower
