  2. “TR” • Most prominent Progressive leader • Former War Hero, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Governor of NY, and Vice-President • Boxer, wrestler, hunter, rower, and rancher • According to his son,“TR always wanted to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral”

  3. “TR” • Most popular politician of his time • Handled the mass media and got them on his side • Gave him the nickname “Teddy” and “TR”

  4. Coal Strike of 1902

  5. Coal Strike of 1902 • Mine workers union went on strike • Wanted higher wages, 8-hour workday, and recognition of the union • Against his advisors wishes, TR got involved and invited the owners and the union to the White House

  6. Coal Strike of 1902 • Coal owners wanted TR to use the army to break the union • TR said he would use the army, but to take over the mines • “To hell with the Constitution when the people want coal!”

  7. Result of Strike? • Mine workers got a 10% pay increase • 9 hour workday • NO union recognition

  8. TR and Conservation

  9. Conservation • efficient management and use of natural resources, such as forests, grasslands, and rivers, • Major focus for TR • Tripled the size of U.S. Forests • Bureau of Reclamation Federal agency established in 1902 providing public funds for irrigation projects in arid regions

  11. Trust Busting • Filed most famous antitrust suit in 1902 against the Northern Securities Company owned by JP Morgan • Northern Securities Company wanted to control the railroad network of the Northwest • In 1904 the Supreme Court ordered the dissolution of the Northern Securities Company

Other Regulation • TR responded to the growing popular demand for reform by pushing further toward a regulatory government • Would go on to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act • The meat and food drug acts extended government regulation over business to protect the public health and safety, but also benefitted businesses by driving out smaller competitors
