Cultural Clashes: The Crusades and the Fight for the Holy Lands

The Crusades marked a significant clash between Christian and Muslim cultures, initiated in response to the Seljuk Turks' control of the Holy Lands. In 1095, Pope Urban II called for a crusade after the Byzantine Emperor's plea, claiming atrocities against Christians. This rallying cry attracted 60,000 to 100,000 crusaders, driven by religious devotion, wealth, and revenge. As each side viewed the conflict through its own lens—Christians as defenders of faith and Muslims as protectors of their land—their differing perspectives shaped their actions and escalated tensions in the region.
