  1. Teach Them Diligently Deuteronomy 6

  2. Introduction • “If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for.”—Charles Spurgeon

  3. Take home truth • We will give an account for our parenting—may our children’s persuasion religiously be our chief most aim.

  4. We will give an account for our parenting—may our children’s persuasion religiously be our chief most aim. • What we do as fathers. • How we do as fathers. • Why we do as fathers.

  5. What we do as fathers (v 7) • Teach them diligently to your children. • Teach what? • His commandments. • Proverbs 22.6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (KJV)” • This does not mean that everything you teach your child will stick with them. • Ingrained, non-negotiable notions.

  6. What we do as fathers • Proverbs 3.1-12 • V 5 Wholly sold out to God. • Faith and persevering love (3) • Avoid Arrogance (7) • Tithing (9) • Admitting Wrong (11-12)

  7. How we do as fathers (8-9) • When? • Sit down • Dinner table, business • Walk by the way • Travelling, at or going to events • Lie down • Before bed • Rise up • Wake up, before business

  8. How we do as fathers • Frequency? • Bind on hand • Frontlet • Door posts • Gates

  9. How we do as fathers • NOT religious robo-cop • Like Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof; “the good book says…” • Constant inquiry and consideration of matters in light of Scripture. • Requires honesty and transparency with children.

  10. Why we do as fathers (20-25) • There will come a time when our children ask us the important questions: • Why do you do that? • Why don’t you do that? • Why do we do things this way? • Answer: Because here is what Christ has done for me.

  11. Why we do as fathers • We do this in order to persuade them by our character and life transforming testimony that Christ is supreme.

  12. conclusion • “Lead Me”—Sanctus Real

  13. Conclusion • I want to leave you with the Spurgeon quote, only modified for our purposes: • “If our children are marching toward destruction”, and they are without God’s intervention, “let them have to hop over our bodies to get there. Let no son or daughter of ours go unwarned, or unsprayed for.”
