  1. Billy Bishop Goes to War

  2. A liar? • Because Bishop flew many of his patrols alone, most of his victories were never witnessed. In 1982, the National Film Board released The Kid Who Couldn't Miss -- a docudrama which challenged his reputation. This led to an inquiry by the Canadian government in 1985. In conclusion, the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology discredited the film, finding it to be an unfair and inaccurate portrayal of Bishop.

  3. Tuesday, May 07, 2002 OTTAWA, A new book by Brereton Greenhous, retired Department of National Defence Historian, attempts to re-hash the suggestion, made first in the 1982 National Film Board film, that World War I fighter ace, Billy Bishop was a "liar and cheat." The new work, titled The Making of Billy Bishop, even suggests that he fabricated the story of a raid on a German Aerodrome, which won him the VC. Cliff Chadderton, Chief Executive Officer of The War Amps, who has studied the life of Billy Bishop for many years, discredited much of the NFB film, The Kid Who Couldn't Miss. Chadderton's views were set out in what he termed a "historical digest," entitled Hanging a Legend, which was financed by Bishop supporters. The War Amps also released a film titled The Billy Bishop Controversy in 1986. In view of the current interest arising out of the new Greenhous book, The War Amps has re-released this 30-minute documentary. It will be available on community channels.
