  2. Braided Hair Lesson Objective: Identify a choice you can make to move beyond a negative personal quality.

  3. Braided Hair The song Braided Hair addresses the fact that all people have gifts and all have made mistakes, but neither our gifts, nor our mistakes define where we go from here. It points out that we share heritage and may “survive as brothers… or perish… as fools,” and ultimately life twists like braided hair—the direction of those twists is really up to us. . watch video

  4. Braided Hair Reflection Question #1: One Giant Leap sings, “I am you and you are me I see.” In what ways is this true? In what ways are all people alike regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual preference, or economic status? When we reflect on the shared experience of all humans, what does it imply about how we should treat one another? What responsibility to we have to and for one another?

Braided Hair Reflection Question #2: The song Braided Hair addresses the fact that our “cool” and “whack” qualities are “just the things that make us real, not the maps to guide where we go from here.” In short, the lyrics suggest that we have choices about our behavior. What qualities do you possess that sometimes hold you back? What choices might you make to move beyond those qualities in a positive manner?

  6. Braided Hair Quick-Write Directions: Respond in writing to both reflection questions. Write nonstop without concern for writing conventions. The writing is a thinking tool and the time is strictly for thinking. (4 minutes) Read over your reflections. Underline your most interesting ideas—those that you want to share with a partner.

Be prepared to share either your own or your partner’s idea.
