Data sources (I) • Nationally representative surveys • Expenditure and Food Survey • Measures consumption & income, including benefits of all kinds for HH’s & constituent individuals • (Same survey so no imputation needed) • Includes enrollment information about school & higher & further education • General Household Survey • Use this for measures of health utilization • Wealth and Asset Survey • Use this for measures of individual wealth • (Excludes Northern Ireland)

Data sources (II) • Administrative data • Use OECD data for relative cost of different types of schooling • Use Department of Health data for health profiles • National Accounts Data • Except for Worksheets 3 & 4, use Blue Book via OECD database, obtained from Gretchen • For Worksheets 3 & 4, use Blue Book data entered in directly using series numbers in the Spreadsheet (& check the balance!)

  5. Working directories • Code & spreadsheets in Dropbox directory Within each year folder there should be the following files Each year has a folder

A rather messy symbiosis of STATA & Excel GHS utilization data for Health Profiles EFS: derive YL etc, CFx, calc imputed rentals, CFE, CFH, TGx, YKx, inter-HH transfers Smooth the profiles, calculate macro-control adjustments, apply these to unsmoothed profiles Calculate intra-HH transfers WAS: calculate wealth profiles DoH controls & age profiles for Health Profiles OECD data: relative prices of primary, secondary, tertiary public education Macro Controls Spreadsheet produces .csv export file Use Asset_Based_reallocations file to do final calculations STATA EXCEL

Some issues where we may need to investigate a little more (I) • Using the magnificent ntasmooth Gaussian kernel smoother vs prescribed alternative • Transfers to RoW in Macro Controls spreadsheet • Treatment of housing benefit (cash or in-kind?) • Treatment of Carer’s allowance • Students in residences • Attribution of property taxes • Tax credits & child benefits • Add code for outflow tax profiles

  8. Some issues where we may need to investigate a little more (II) • Alimony or child support? • Student financing for students outside the HH • Definition of HH • Align to macro-controls both before & after smoothing & transfers calculated • Weighting – HH vs individual
