  1. The Liturgy of the Word What stories do you know from the Bible that should be read out at Mass? Choose one story. Why should it be read out? • To define liturgy • To describe how the Liturgy of the Word tells the story behind the celebration of the Mass • To explain how God is present in His Word

  2. 1. Read the stories. Give each one a title, that explains what it will be about. • 2. Choose one story that you like. Explain • What you can learn about God from this story • What you can learn about what people are like, or should be like, from this story. • **Why is it important to read out Bible stories as part of Mass? Give 2 reasons.

  3. Write out the 6 stages of the Liturgy of the Word. & match them up to their explanation. Which part of the Liturgy of the Word can you learn most from? Why? **What are the differences between the different kinds of readings? The First Reading The Psalm The Second Reading The Gospel (priest) The Homily (priest) Bidding prayers A poem from OT, some written by King David Prayers based on the readings A reading from the OT A reading from the NT, about Jesus The “story-telling” part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the Word. It has 6 parts to it. When the priests talks about the readings. A reading from NT – from the letters of the apostles.

  4. Favourite Stories Tell your partner your favourite bible story. Explain to them what people would learn from it.

  5. Go back to the stories you gave titles to at the beginning.Imagine one of these stories is being read out at Mass. With your partner, write 3 bidding prayers, based on this reading. The prayers could be for particular people, that the readings make you think about encourage us to behave in a good way, as the story teaches us hope that God will do something similar for us Read out your bidding prayers. See if the rest of the class can guess which story they were based on.
