  2. Knowing the language is one thing. Speaking it is another. Writing, however, is least forgiving when it comes to language errors. Strong writing skills are necessary for students and businesspersons to communicate exactly what they have in mind. Grammar also comes into play. Not everyone is proficient in grammar or punctuation, and learning to write effectively can be a lifelong, continuously-evolving process.

  3. First of all, students must get to know their institution’s preferred academic writing style. It will save them the trouble of having to practically redraft their paper later. The sentence is basic to any document. Writers can make use of a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences to lucidly convey what they wish to say without redundancies or ambiguities. Short sentences are good, but they can appear stilted, so it is good practice combining sentences with the use of conjunctions, semicolons, or colons, and appropriate punctuation. In the process, writers may get carried away and create long sentences that can confuse readers, so they need to be careful when balancing length.

  4. The paragraph is another important consideration. The generally accepted convention is for a paragraph to deal with one idea. It begins with a sentence indicating the topic of the paragraph. Subsequent sentences elaborate on the idea, and the paragraph ends with a build up to another idea that is expounded in the succeeding paragraph. One must never underrate the comma. When placed correctly in a complex sentence, it separates phrases yet allows for a flow that conveys the writer’s point without ambiguity.

  5. Many writers unclear about using apostrophes. It is all right to say, “don’t,” but academic writing requires that you do not make use of such contractions. Apostrophes also denote possession, and there are rules governing their use after singular and plural possessives that a writer must know. Students are likely use difficult words to demonstrate erudition. This strategy does not impress because simple words are always preferable. People write the way they think. However, phraseology dictates that writers must follow the sentence structure rules in the placement of subject, verb, object, preposition, adjectives, and adverbs. Non-English writers, for example, commonly place modifying adverbs after a verb instead of its correct position preceding the verb.
