  1. The gold chain Chapter 1 Zelda Ring lived in the biggest house on Lorton Street. Her family was very rich and had opulent decorations in their house. A long, long time ago, a creative man, Henry Whirtaker designed this intricate blue house and put lots of details in this house. Infact, there were so many details that Zelda had just discovered a few hidden ones yesterday. A very unique gold chain hung in the corner of Zelda’s bedroom. Nobody knew how it got there or who put it there. It was taken from somewhere because you could see the hook on the ceiling which it was attached to. Zelda Ring was very inquisitive; she loved to draw and tell stories about her drawings. One of Zelda’s favourite drawing was the gold chain hanging in her bedroom. She drew it when she was younger so it didn’t look exactly like the real chain. She imagined that the chain had magical powers and could transport you to different places. Zelda never told anyone about her drawings but kept telling the same stories about her drawing to herself. 1

  2. She was scared that her friends would laugh at her and think she was stupid. Since Zelda was an only child, she was always spoilt - and everyone knew that. Yet, nobody seemed to mind, her friends just got influenced by her and became all snobbish like Zelda, and her parents just lived with it. Zelda knew her family was already very rich, but she wanted more. A lot more than a big house, designer brand clothes, gold jewellery, a swimming pool, a butler, basically everything she had! Mr and Mrs Ring, (Zelda’s parents) were always busy with something. If they hadn’t hired a butler to cook, shop for their groceries and clean the house, the whole family would have been chaotic trying to do everything at once. Even with a butler, Mr and Mrs Ring were too busy for anything except spoiling their daughter and doing their own ‘business’, as they called it. Mrs Ring was an artist, she taught many students including Zelda. Her lessons were very expensive because the children she taught were very rich and that was how Mrs Ring earned her money. Mr Ring was a very mysterious man. He was often speculated by many people about what he was doing.Mr Ring owned a shop in front of their house and spent lots of time in there. Everyday an old lady would park her car up on the driveway of the big blue house and go into Mr Ring’s little shop for quite a long time then come out and drive away. Nobody knew what they did in there. Some people thought Mr Ring was a terrorist and planned all his evil deeds in there with the old lady that was his assistant. 2

  3. Others thought he was a spy and did his computer work inside a room so nobody could see him. But Zelda knew the truth, Mr Ring was kind of like a contortionist. He bent himself into all sorts of weird, flexible shapes in his little room. But it wasn’t her father that intrigued Zelda the most, it was the black suitcase that the old lady brought everywhere. Every time the old lady came to the big blue house, she was always carrying a black suitcase. There wasn’t one time Zelda saw when she wasn’t carrying her suitcase. What was inside it and why was she always carrying it?

  4. Chapter 2 Zelda sat on the edge of her bed and watched the long black car trudge up the driveway. A short while after the car was parked, a grumpy-looking lady came out, holding the same black suitcase Zelda saw everyday. Zelda always wondered why the lady looked so grumpy all the time, her back was so hunched Zelda wondered if she actually was that flexible to learn contortion. Zelda ran downstairs and out the door just to have a closer look at the lady. She sat on the front steps of her house and examined the lady carefully. She stared at the lady so hard that the old lady just glared back at Zelda coldly as if to say ‘What are you staring at, young lady?’. That glare was enough for the snobbish girl to stick her nose in the air and strut off to the back garden. Just at that moment, a strong gale blew at Zelda’s face, it whipped her hair back and slapped her in the face. The shocked girl turned around and started to head back inside. But then she stopped - the door of her father’s shop was slightly ajar! Curiosity told Zelda just to have a peek inside and see what the old lady was doing. Slowly, she opened the door a tiny bit more. Creak! Zelda stepped inside, the floorboards twitched a bit but stayed still. That was when she saw it- the suitcase! It sat on the mahogany table just in the hallway leading to the contortion training room. “ Just go in and grab it!” sneered curiosity. “ No! You can’t take something that’s not yours!” replied Zelda’s conscience fiercely. “ T H E S U I T C A S E

  5. “Just take a peek of what’s inside then run off!” encouraged curiosity. Zelda just couldn’t help it, she was dying of curiosity by now. “I’ll just have a quick peek,” thought Zelda. “After all, that lady was very mean to me!” Zelda’s knees shook, slowly she crept up towards the hallway. Zelda stopped to breathe at the corner of the hallway. She turned her head around the arch of the wall to see if her dad would see her. There she was, the old lady in a backbend, pushing her head through her legs. Zelda was so intrigued by the old lady’s flexibility that she didn’t even realise her father coming straight at her. That was when realisation struck her. “ Quick, grab the suitcase and run!” curiosity urged Zelda. She sprinted towards the table, just dodging her father with a split second advantage. Zelda grabbed the handle of the suitcase, heart pounding, legs aching when a shout came from the contortion training room, “ Don’t you dare touch that suitcase! Mr Ring, get it off that wretch at once! Girl, come back here at once! You will not touch that possession of mine! Get back here...” By that time Zelda had already reached the edge of the door and was opening the shiny, silver buckles of the suitcase. She could hear the old lady’s harsh voice fading away slowly and sense her father just standing on the spot, not knowing what to do. This was her time now to open the suitcase! Zelda pulled up the lid of the suitcase and what she found inside was rather surprising. A snow globe glistened in the light, with shimmering flakes of glitter sunk at the bottom. Underneath the globe was inscribed a name – Louise Daina Wright. The old lady’s name! Finally an answer to one of Zelda’s questions! Zelda, mesmerised by the snow globe shook it so that the glitter floated around inside. Suddenly, she felt extremely dizzy and nauseous. Zelda’s mind was chaotic, spinning round and round and round ... Until she collapsed to the ground abruptly, just like that!
