  1. Cost of Energy Services for Lighting and Cooking in Nepal Min B Malla Shirish Singh PushkarManandhar Teodoro Sanchez

  2. Objective of the Study • The primary objective of this study was to establish the right attributes of the SCORE Stove to be Socially, Technically and Financially acceptable for the poor and isolated areas of Nepal • Study aims: • Create detailed picture on the patterns of access and use of energy services • Analyse monetary expenditure on different sources of energy compared to household income

  3. Study Methodology Cost Estimate “Households (HH) "used as unit of analysis Expenditure on Energy: Direct and Indirect costs calculated (time loss, health cost) Health Cost: Calculated from treatment costs and loss of working days

  4. Access to Electricity for Lighting Approximately 55% have national grid connections 21% get electricity off-grid: Micro Hydro <5Kw £96/HH,>5KW £120/HH, Average Solar Pv £ 110.85/HH 24% have no access to any energy services Main use of electricity is for lighting 69% of those with grid connections unhappy with services , primarily due to frequent load shedding Annual Running cost for lighting is 2.8% of a families income

  5. Cooking Energy

  6. Health Cost due to indoor Air Pollution

  7. Conclusions • -24% of HH Have No Access to Any Electricity • -Proportion of grid connection looks high but electricity supply is unreliable • Proportion of income spent on energy looks high because of: • Inefficient Technologies • High cost of fuels/ low access to grid connection due to poor topography and economic activity • Impacts upon SCORE Stove Design
