  9. Indian Ocean Trade SimulationStep 1 • Review trade simulation roles • Note requirements for each role: • City Merchants • Maritime merchants • Pilgrims • Each city should choose one port city merchant, one maritime merchant, and one pilgrim (groups of four should choose two port city merchants)

  10. Indian Ocean Trade SimulationStep 2 Make a poster of your city encouraging others to visit and trade. Include: • Name of city • Trade goods available • Symbol of City • Access to holy sites (if any) • Other attractions Hormuz and Aden have access to Mecca Calicut and Cochin have access to Buddhist shrines

  11. Indian Ocean Trade SimulationStep 3Trade Logistics • Trade goods on demand schedule may be purchased from port cities or from other maritime merchants • Prices for sale or purchase of goods negotiated at each port city • Technologies and knowledge can only be acquired when merchants or pilgrims visit appropriate cities (see technology schedule) • Each person must keep a log for each trade round • You may only move one contiguous city per round

  12. Indian Ocean Trade SimulationStep 4Planning • Now it’s time to plan your trading strategy First, label the major trading ports on your blank map and annotate with the goods (supply) and technologies they have available—note also points of diffusion for technology Second, work with your group to plan a strategy to decide where you need to go to obtain the goods you desire
