Funding Opportunities for Human-Robot Interaction and Curriculum Development

Explore diverse funding opportunities under NSF's various programs, aimed at enhancing research and education in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and Curriculum Development. The available funds support summer initiatives, release time for faculty, graduate student support, equipment, and travel. Key programs include CPATH, IGERT, REU Sites, and MRI/CRI, catering to small, medium, and large projects. Proposal deadlines and formats vary, with specific emphasis on multidisciplinary approaches to tackle future challenges in undergraduate computing education.

Funding, Funding, Funding,…(not just for Alan) • Summer support, release time, graduate student support, equipment, travel money, …, etc. • Program Solicitation NSF06-572 • HCC, III, RI (Core technical areas) • HRI, IPS, and IIS-CD (Curriculum Development) • CPATH (NSF06-608; CISE Directorate) • IGERT (NSF06-525; Foundation-wide) • REU Sites (NSF05-592; Foundation-wide) • MRI/CRI (NSF05-515; Foundation/Directorate-wide)

  3. NSF06-572 (IIS-CD) • Curriculum development relating to IIS research area of interest -- RI, HCC, III, HRI, IPS,… • Awards: small, medium, and large projects • See NSF 06-572 for details on proposal format.

  4. CPATHCISE Pathways to Revitalized Undergraduate Computing • Solicitation NSF 06-608 • CISE Directorate-wide • Funding amount: $6M in FY07 • Deadline: January 23, 2007 • Some institution and PI limitation requirements • Proposal format; additional review criteria

  5. Motivations for CPATH • Fluctuating enrollments • Multidisciplinary nature of field • Industry and workforce needs • Global economy • Rapid pace of innovation and changes to discipline • Multiple pathways to broaden participation • Future ”Grand Challenges” in undergraduate computing education

  6. CPATH • Supports four types of projects: • Community Building (CB) grants; • Evaluation, Adoption, and Extension (EAE) grants; • Transformation (T) grants; and • CISE Distinguished Education Fellow (EDEF) grants. • Estimated number of awards: ($6M in FY07) • 18 to 30 total; • 15-25 CB awards ($50K-$500K up to 3 yrs.); • 1 or 2 EAE awards (up to $900K up to 3 yrs.); • 1 or 2 T awards (up to $1.5M up to 5yrs.); • 1-3 CDEF awards (up to $250K for 2 yrs.).

  8. Types of Activities Funded by CPATH (2)

  9. Types of Activities Funded by CPATH (3)

  10. CPATH Focus This Year • Community building and CDEFprojects • Planning and pilot projects -- few full scale implementations • Seed many promising ideas with competition in the future for full implementation

  11. Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) • Mainly to support Ph.D. students (10-15 Ph.D.’s) • 2-stage competition • Up to $3.1M for 5 years (2 years ago) • No release time for faculty • 8% overhead • No cost-sharing is required • Ken Whang is IIS representative

  12. REU Sites • REU Sites are encouraged to involve students in research who might not otherwise have the opportunity, particularly those from academic institutions where research programs are limited • Projects may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-departmental research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme • Daniel DeMenthon is IIS representative

  13. Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) • Foundation-wide program (OIA) • Awards: $100K - $2M • Limited submissions per institution • CISE PD is Rita Rodriguez • CRI is CISE-wide and has limited fund. • Submit your MRI proposals to Rita (talk to Rita)!!!
