Responsive Mode • If the restrictions on the First Grant scheme do not allow for the type of project you are considering then you should apply through standard responsive mode. • No limits on duration or resource • Panels meet 4 times a year • Primary criterion is Research Quality The project should be the driver as to which funding route is the most appropriate for your application to EPSRC.

First Grant Scheme • First application to EPSRC (not including fellowships) • Within 36 months of first permanent academic post in the UK • Within 10 years of completing your PhD • Capped at £125k at full economic cost • Limited duration of up to two years • First Grants are only compared to other first grant applications at panel meetings

  8. Managed Calls Fellowships

Postdoctoral Fellowships • Enable talented researchers to establish an independent research career • Up to 3 years fellowship • Primarily funding salary costs, travel and subsistence • Can be used to change academic institution • No nationality or age restrictions, but applicants must have no more than 3 yrs postdoctoral experience • Proposals are peer reviewed. Suitably supported proposals are then sent to a Sifting panel, where the top applicants are chosen, and invited to interview. • Call opens in early summer

Career Acceleration Fellowships • Supports talented individuals at an early stage of their research career • Up to 5 years of funding for salary, travel, equipment and research staff • Expectation that fellows will have established an independent career of international standing by the end of the award. • Should not hold, or have held, a permanent academic post, or have received, before the start date of the award, the promise of a permanent academic post. • You should have between 3 and 10 years postdoctoral research experience. • Next call opens around July 2010, full details of the 2009/2010 call are still available online, and may be of interest.

Leadership Fellowships What are they? • Support for future international research leaders • Candidate must hold permanent academic post in eligible institution • Up to 5 years funding (including PI time, T&S and/or PDRAs/PhDs Process • Call for outlines should appear in July 2010 • Sifting panel (December 2010?) to invite full proposals • Interview panel around May 2011

What are the Mission Programmes? • Address important societal issues • Large potential impact • Long-term goals • Multidisciplinary research • Teams from all areas are needed • Research funding • Managed calls • Co-funding of some projects Living with environmental change (£9M); Global Uncertainties: security for all in a changing world (£6M); Ageing: life-long health and wellbeing (£11M)

Energy and Digital Economy Energy: help UK develop a sustainable and environmental-friendly economy • Adapt to climate change • Low-carbon economy • Power generation, supply and transport • … Digital Economy: improve the way information and communication technologies transform life and society • Technology and healthcare • Applications in transport • Information exchange and society • …

Call: Mathematics underpinning the Mission Programmes Why the call? • Support cross-disciplinary collaborations that develop and apply novel mathematical approaches to Energy and Digital Economy • Promote greater engagement and knowledge exchange between the maths research community, other disciplines and application area More information • All proposals must demonstrate clear relevance to at least one of the strategic priorities of Energy or DE • Up to £5 million earmarked for this activity (£3M from Energy and DE) • We expect to fund 7-12 proposals • Call should open in the next month or so…check the website!

  16. Career breaks/part time working • Fellowships may be held part time at a minimum of 50% FTE • CAFs and LFs may convert to part time during award • Maternity leave and career breaks are excluded when considering eligibility for schemes • Call us if you have any questions!
