  1. Area(s) of Significant Benefit Safety Performance Sustainability Operations Infrastructure A non-destructive monitoring and evaluation system for orbiter and ground support system structure integrity • Description • Develop an integrated structural health monitoring system for the Orbiter and the Ground Support System • Collect the data under specific test conditions and also continuously under normal operations for safety control • Analyze the data with Hilbert-Huang Transformation (HHT) to identify nonlinearity and damages • Demonstrate the system architecture and performance of health monitoring sensors and HHT algorithm for predicting failure modes common in orbiter, ground support system, and other flight vehicles • Technologies and Capabilities • HHT, a new adaptive data analysis method, designed for nonlinear and nonstationary data • HHT can identify the nonlinearity in the vibration signal, and relate it to damage scenarios in structures and machines • HHT represents the only nonlinear data analysis method for damage detection • Demonstrate the performance of an integrated structural health monitoring management system for the orbiter using a flight-tested proven procedure Benefits and Impacts Obsolescence Reduction Risk Reduction Safety Improvement Cost Reduction Process Improvement Other (Ultra-High Operations Improvement Reliability) Performance Enhancement • POC, Cost, Schedule and Maturity • TRL 7: 100% inspection 001 • POC: Norden E. Huang : GSFC (301) 614-5713 • M. J. Brenner, DRFC and R. Margasahayam, KSC • Allows real time monitoring of the structure and earlier warning of failure • Detect, identify, and predict the existence, location, and the degree of damage severity • Reduction in Criticality 1 Failure Rate of 15%

  2. A non-destructive monitoring and test system for orbiter and ground support system structure integrity • Total Project Costs: $ 28.8 M • Feasibility: $ 1.8 M • Formulation: $ 3.0 M • Implementation: $ 24.0 M • Project Submitted By: • Norden E. Huang, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center • Martin J. Brenner, NASA Dryden Flight Research Center • Ravi N. Margasahayam, Kennedy Space Center
