Area(s) of Significant Benefit Safety Performance Sustainability Operations Infrastructure Detection of Overheating Electrical Wire • Description • This proposed study is to develop a method to prevent potential fire that may result from overheating of electrical wire in the Shuttle, International Space Station, or other Space vehicles. • It detects microencapsulated precursor chemicals before the occurrence of fire. • It identify the type and the location of the wire that may become a problem, provide an alarm, and initiate appropriate corrective actions. • Technologies and Capabilities • Identify chemicals that are appropriate for encapsulating and tagging. • Prepare the microcapsules and attach them to the wires. • Set up apparatus for wire heating and testing. • Train the E-Nose for the detection and correct identification of the tagging chemicals. • Prepare report and conduct a demonstration.
