  1. Facility Systems (WBS 62-65) L. Dudek, G. Gettelfinger, M. Kalish Larry Dudek Slide 1

  2. Facility Systems • Water Systems (WBS 62) • Cryogenic Systems (WBS 63) • Utility Systems - GN2, Air, Vent (WBS 64) • Helium Bakeout (WBS 65) Larry Dudek Slide 2

  3. Water Cooling System Requirements • Provide water cooling for • NBI • Torus vacuum pumping • Helium bakeout system • Diagnostics • Work scope involves adding cooling loops that tie into existing CS/HVAC water systems Larry Dudek Slide 3

  4. Water Systems P&ID

  5. Cryogenic System Requirements • Provide GN2 cooling to cool the coils and structures inside the cryostat from ambient (293K) to operating (80K) temperature • Provide GN2 cooling of the structures inside the cryostat during operation • Provide closed loop LN2 cooling for modular, TF, and PF coils during operation • Provide GN2 heating to bring the coils and structures inside the cryostat back to ambient Larry Dudek Slide 5

  8. LN2 Storage and Delivery • Cryogenic heat loads are modest • Cooldown • Two (2) 6,500 gallon trucks • Bakeout (150C VV) • 15.3 kW, 2.3 trucks per week • Not operating (20C VV) • 10.5 kW, 1.6 trucks per week • Operating (20C VV) • 4.6 trucks per week based on 160 full power shots per week • Existing 9,000 gallon LN2 tank will be re-used Larry Dudek Slide 8

  9. Helium Bakeout System Requirements • Heat and maintain VV at 150C during bakeout • 12 kW heat loss to cold mass • Maintain VV at 20C during normal operation • 7 kW heat loss to cold mass • Heating CFC liner for 350C bakeout is a future upgrade Larry Dudek Slide 9

  10. 24 kW Helium bakeout system 150 C 165 C NCSX 62 kW Heater • Patterned after NSTX • High pressure system (270 psig) for high He density • Industrial blower (low P) inside pressure vessel more economical than compressor • 24 kW available 127 C 155 kW HEX #1 56 C Bypass Cooling 32 C 60 kW Valve HEX #2 Water 270 psi Blower Assy. 19 C 250 psi RV Orifice 21 kW Pressure Regulating Valve

  11. Blower and Motor with Housing Retracted (NSTX Skid) Larry Dudek Slide 11

  12. Facility Systems Cost and Schedule WBS Cost w/o Cont Cont% Cont $ • Facility Systems will be made operational in time for subsystem testing Larry Dudek Slide 12

  13. Conclusions • Cost, schedule, and technical risks have been minimized in Facility Systems • Adapting an existing design minimizes risks in the Helium Bakeout System (WBS 65) • Having LN2 delivered instead of having on-site refrigeration greatly simplifies the Cryogenic Systems (WBS 63) design • Facility Systems are designed with commercial, off-the-shelf components utilizing standard construction techniques Larry Dudek Slide 13
