  1. In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry February 15, 2009 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  2. Jesus Leaves for Galilee • Mark 1:14 • “14Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.’” • Luke 1:14 • “14And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. Jesus Arrives in Galilee • Matthew 4:12 • “12Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee;” • John 4:43-45 • “43After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. 44For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  4. Jesus’ Journey to Galilee www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  5. For Discussion • What does Jesus mean by saying that “a prophet has no honor in his own country”? • What specifically might He be referring to? • How did the Galileans receive Him? • Why? • What had the Galileans seen in Jerusalem? • When had they seen it? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. At The Feast • John 2:23-25 • “23Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. 24But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, 25and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  7. Jesus Arrives in Cana • John 4:46-47 • “46Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  8. Capernaum to Cana www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  9. The Royal Official • This man was likely an official of Herod the Tetrarch • He came up to Cana from Capernaum, a journey of about 20-25 miles • Why? • What does this say about the official’s feelings about Jesus? • About his faith? • How would he have known Jesus was in Cana? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  10. Seeking Signs • John 4:48 • “48So Jesus said to him, ‘Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.’” • Numbers 14:11 • “11The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people spurn Me? And how long will they not believe in Me, despite all the signs which I have performed in their midst?” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  11. For Discussion • Why would Jesus respond to the official with what seems to be a rebuff? • What kind of signs were the people seeking? • What was Jesus saying to the people? • How does this contrast with the reception Jesus received from the Samaritans? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  12. The Official’s Plea • John 4:49-53a • “49The royal official said to Him, ‘Sir, come down before my child dies.’ 50Jesus said to him,‘Go; your son lives.’ The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. 51As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. 52So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, ‘Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.’53So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, ‘Your son lives’;” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  13. For Discussion • How does the official respond to the rebuff? • What is Jesus ultimate answer to the official? • How does the official respond to Jesus’ pronouncement? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  14. The Official Believes • John 4:52-54 • “53band he himself believed and his whole household. 54This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.” • What is the result of this whole incident? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  15. Similarities • Note the similarities to the wedding miracle in John 2 • Jesus has just come back into Galilee • Someone comes to him with a request. • Indirectly Jesus seems to refuse at first • The petitioner persists • Jesus grants the request • This leads another group of people (his disciples, the nobleman’s household) to believe in him • A literary device known as an inclusio, used to encircle or enclose material pertaining to a single topic www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  16. Jesus Settles in Capernaum • Matthew 4:13-17 • “13and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:15‘The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles - 16The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.’17From that time Jesus began to preach and say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  17. Isaiah’s Prophecy • Isaiah 9:1-2 • “1But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  18. Isaiah (cont.) • Isaiah 9:3-5 • “3You shall multiply the nation, you shall increase their gladness; they will be glad in Your presence as with the gladness of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. 5For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, and cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  19. Unto Us A Child Is Born • Isaiah 9:6-7 • “6For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  20. Zebulun & Naphtali www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  21. For Discussion • Jesus moves his “home base” to Capernaum • Speculation that Joseph has died and that Jesus moves his family • Jesus begins to preach “‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” • What has He been preaching up to now? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
