  1. In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus’ Post-Resurrection Appearances – Part II October 7, 2012 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  2. The Appearances www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. Appearance #4 • Matthew 28:16 • 16But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. • Mark 16:14 • 14Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  4. Appearance #4 • Luke 24:36-43 • 36While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be to you."37But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit. 38And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?"42They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; 43and He took it and ate it before them. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  5. Appearance #4 • John 20:19-23 • 19So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." 20And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained." www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. For Discussion • There is significant difference in Matthew’s account versus the other Gospel writers • Matthew has them on a mountain in Galilee • The others have them meeting over a meal • Possibly points to another appearance • Why show His wounds? • Why would Jesus ask for something to eat? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  7. For Discussion • Jesus appeared inside a locked room • The disciples thought they were seeing a ghost • Jesus was NOT a spirit • Jesus had a real body • Complete with His crucifixion wounds www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  8. Doubting Thomas • John 20:24-25 • 24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." • How many of us would have been like Thomas? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  9. Appearances #2, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 11 • 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 • 3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  10. For Discussion • Why would Paul relate all of these appearances? • He is writing to the church in Corinth • They were not eyewitnesses to these events • These events are a part of Paul’s foundation of the Christian faith www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  11. Appearance #7 • John 20:26-29 • 26After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." 27Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing." 28Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" 29Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed." www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  12. For Discussion • Jesus appears to the disciples again • This time WITH Thomas • Thomas is now a believer • Jesus speaks to us across the ages • We must believe without seeing www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  13. Appearance #8 • John 21:1-3 • 1 After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. 2Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will also come with you." They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  14. Appearance #8 • John 21:4-6 • 4But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5So Jesus said to them, "Children, you do not have any fish, do you?" They answered Him, "No." 6And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch." So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  15. Appearance #8 • John 21:7-8 • 7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord." So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  16. Appearance #8 • John 21:9-11 • 9So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread. 10Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have now caught." 11Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  17. Appearance #8 • John 21:12-14 • 12Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples ventured to question Him, "Who are You?" knowing that it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. 14This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  18. Appearance #9 • Luke 24:50-53 • 50And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and were continually in the temple praising God. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  19. Appearance #9 • Mark 16:19-20 • 19So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.] www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  20. Closing Thoughts • Jesus made numerous appearances to all sorts of people • The appearances served as a confirmation of all the Jesus had promised • How do we know these things are true? • Twelve apostles (11 of the original, plus Paul), except John (who died of natural causes), chose death over denouncing their faith in Jesus www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
