  3. The Problem Oysters were so plentiful in the Chesapeake Bay in the 1700’s Over-harvesting, poor water quality, disease Now only stands at 2% of it’s historic level Industry Water Quality

Solution Take advantage of all the unneeded oyster shells off of Carrabelle, FL Excavators with clam buckets are pulling up oyster shells 7 miles out in the ocean and piling them up into dump trucks Dump trucks will carry them to train cars 50 train cars filled with shells will transport to Maryland every 10-14 days Maryland Department of Natural Resources are purchasing these shells for about $6.3 million dollars from Gulf Coast Aggregates

Why CSX’s Oyster Express will transport a total of 112,500 cubic yards of shell to the site Enough to cover 80 football fields and a foot high Nursery grounds for young oysters Create habitat for a variety of species Help clean the water Best possible material to build an oyster reef is natural oyster shell
