  1. DO NOW • WRITE YOUR NAME • TAKE OUT HOMEWORK • Write your group member names • Read the background • Read procedure 1

  2. Paper Towel Lab Biology Ms. Taylor

  3. Procedure

  4. Pour 100 ml of water from the graduated cylinder to the beaker

  5. Fold paper towel in half the long way

  6. Make qualitative and quantitative observations

  7. Put paper towel in the water. Lean it against the side of the beaker. Start stop watch immediately

  8. Let water move for 1 minute exactly

  9. Immediately take paper towel out after 1 min, lay on counter, and immediately measure the distance the water traveled in centimeters

  10. 6.4 cm

  11. We are observing the absorption of water • Trial #1 Results: The paper towel absorbed ______ cm of water. • Trial #2 Results: The paper towel absorbed ______ cm of water.

  12. Ask Questions • “What would happen to the rate of water movement if …” • “Would the water move faster if…” • “Would the water movement change if…”

  13. Make a Hypothesis for both Questions • If _______________________ (something that changed), then the rate of water absorption would increase/decrease/stay the same

  14. Choose an experimental variable from the table!

  15. Design your Experiment • Choose 1 question to answer. • Write the question you chose, and a hypothesis (the possible answer) to that question on page 4.

  16. State Your Variables • Experimental Variable: What you chose from the table • Controlled Variables: Everything else must remain the same as the original experiment
