  1. Reflexive Verbs Verbs that are done to oneself

  2. What are Reflexive Verbs? A verb is reflexive when the subject (the performer of the action) and the object (the receiver of the action) are the same person. Example: I wash myself I and myself are the same person.

  3. In other words…. the subject does the action of the verb to itself Por ejemplo: I wash my hair, You wash your hair, They wash their hair, etc.

  4. Reflexive Verbs have 2 parts 1) A reflexive pronoun 2) A verb You know a verb is reflexive when “se” is added to the end of the infinitive Example: lavarse, arreglarse, sentarse

  5. Conjugation of Reflexive Verbs • Conjugate the verb based on the subject of the sentence • Add the reflexive pronoun that corresponds with the subject. • The subject goes before the reflexive pronoun. Example: Yo me lavo. Túte lavas.

  7. Another rule…… When you are doing an action to a part of your body, you use a definite article – NOT a possessive adjective. Example: I paint my nails. Me pinto lasuñas. He brushes his teeth. Él se cepillalosdientes.

  8. Reflexive Verbs with 2-verb sentence structure When you have a sentence with two verbs, there are two correct ways in which you may use the reflexive verbs: • You can either put the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb... or • You can attach it to the infinitive

  9. THE REFLEXIVE PRONOUN MUST AGREE WITH THE SUBJECT.

  10. Examples Both ways are correct. I want to take a bath now. #1: Yome quierobañarahora. #2: Yoquierobañarmeahora.

  11. More Examples The students are going to wake up at 7:00. #1 Los estudiantes se van a despertar a las 7. #2: Los estudiantes van a despertarse a las 7.

  12. More examples… We have to go to bed early. #1: Nos tenemos que acostartemprano. #2: Tenemos que acostarnostemprano. You are able to sit down in the chair. #1: Tútepuedessentaren la silla. #2: Túpuedessentarteen la silla.

  13. Antes de… Después de When saying that something was done before or after an action, you use antesde + infinitive después de + infinitive Before leaving – antes de salir After arriving – después de llegar

  14. Antes de + reflexive verb Antes de lavarme… Before I wash myself… Antes de cepillartelosdientes… Before you brush your teeth… Después de prepararnos… After preparing ourselves….

  15. Práctica I take a bath. You wash your hair. He dries himself with a towel. We fix our hair. The girls put make-up on.

  16. Respuestas I take a bath. Yo me baño. You wash your hair. Túte lavas el pelo. Juan dries himself with a towel. Juan se seca con unatoalla.

  17. We fix our hair. Nos arreglamos el pelo. The girls put make-up on. -Las chicas se maquillan. -Las chicas se ponenmaquillaje.

  18. 2-verb sentence structure I am able to get dressed. She wants to get up late. They have to paint their nails. I am going to fall down here.

  19. I am able to get dressed. Yo me puedovestir. Yopuedovestirme. She wants to get up late. Ella se quierelevantartarde. Ella quierelevantarsetarde.

  20. They have to paint their nails. Ellasse tienen que pintarlas uñas. Ellastienen que pintarselas uñas. I am going to fall down here. Me voy a caeraqui. Voy a caermeaqui.
