Love That Dog: Pages 60-63 April 20th April 24th Has to sort all the mailnot just my letterbut hundreds and hundreds of letters To hundreds of authorsall that big mess of mailpiled upand someone sorting sortingsortingall that mail and then the letters for Mr. Walter Dean Myersgo to him and maybe he’s awaymaybe he’s on vacationmaybe he’s on vacation Did you mail it? Did he answer yet? Months??? It might take months for Mr. Walter Dean Myers to answer my letter? If he answers it? I didn’t know---until you explained—that the letter has to go to Mr. Walter Dean Myers’s publishing companyand then someoneat the publisher company Can you find all the REPEPiTION in Jack’s Letter?

Love That Dog: Pages 60-63 April 24th So if you ask me It could take him yearsto get around to answering That letterso I guesswe’d betterjust forget about itnot count on itget it out of our mindsdo something else Forget it. Maybe he’s sick maybe he’s hiding in a roomwriting poemsmaybe he’s babysittinghis children or his grandchildren(if he’s married and stuff) or maybe he has to go to the dentistor get that car fixedor maybe someone died(I really reallyreally hopesomeone did not die)

Because it was just wordscoming out of my head And I wasn’t paying attentionto which words came out! Sometimeswhen you are trying not to think about somethingit keeps popping back into your headand you can’t help ityou think about it And think about itand think about ituntil your brainfeels like squashed pea. Maybe you could show me how to usethe computer And then I could type up my own words? What does Jack keep thinking about?

  5. Love That Dog: Page 67 May 8th I didn’t know about the spell checking thinginside the computer. It’s like a miracle little brainin there A little helper brain. But I am slow typer person. Did you say there is a teaching typing thingin that computer, too?Will it help me typebetter and faster Taptaptaptaptap So my fingers can go as fastas my brain? 1. List all of the literary devices in Jack’s entry. 2. How are adding these elements to Jack’s poems helping him become a better poet?

Love That Dog: Pages 68-72 May 14th(I typed this up myself) And he was all over the place smiling and waging and slobberingand making us laughand my dadcame walking up the streethe was way down therenear the endI could see him after he got off the busand he was walk-walk-walkingand I saw him wave and he called out“Hey, there, son!” MY SKY We were outside in the streetme and some other kids Kicking the ballbefore dinnerand Sky was chasing chasingchasingwith his feet going every which way and his tailwag-wag-waggingand his mouth slob-slob-slobbering

Sky!” and he turned his head but it was too latebecause the blue car blue car splattered with mud hit Sky And so I didn’t seethe car coming from the other wayuntil someone else—one of the big kids—called out “Car!” and I turned around and saw a blue car blue carsplattered with mud speeding down the road

Sky!”and then my dad Was there He lifted Sky out of the road and laid him on the grassand Sky closed his eyesand he never opened themagain ever. Thud thudthud And kept on goingin such a hurry so fastso many miles to go it couldn’t even stopand SKYwas just there in the roadlying on his sidewith his legs bent funnyand his side heavingand he looked up at meand I said

But I hope it doesn’t makepeople feel too sadand if it doesmaybe you could think of something to cheer everybody uplike maybe with some of those browniesyou make the chocolate onesthat are so good? I don’t know. If you put it on the board and people read it. It might make them sad. What was the mood in beginning of Jack’s Poem Sky? At the end?

What words on encouragement did she say to make him want to put his name on his poem? You may write this letter on page 11 of your response book. This letter must follow the “Friendly Letter” Format.

He was coming to our cityanywayto see his old buddy? And he would be honoredto visit our clean schooland meet the mostly nice kidswho like his poems?We sure are luckythat his old buddylives in our town. WOW!!!

The bulletin board look like it’s blooming wordswith everybody’s poemsup there on all thosecolored sheets of paperyellow blue pink red green. And the bookcaselook like it’s sprouting booksall of them by Mr. Walter Dean Myers lines up looking back at us I can’t wait. I can’t sleep. Are you sureyou hid my poemthat was inspiredby Mr. Walter Dean Myers?I don’t want to doany any anythingto upset him!
