  4. In groups… • Read the history of This I Believe under the “About” tab • Read the handout “Essay Guidelines” • Read at least 3 essays in your groups, discuss in your groups and complete the graphic organizer

  5. Now… • Individually, brainstorm about your own belief and begin to start an outline or if you prefer, begin your rough draft

  6. For Homework… • Complete your rough draft, have someone review your essay and have it ready to type in the next lesson!!!

Standards addressed in this lesson… • ELACC9-10RI7: Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person’s life story in print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account. • ELACC9-10RI2: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

  10. What is a visual text? • A text that is visual in nature or composite

  11. What are the types of visual texts? Literature informative -static image / poster -theme-based Propaganda texts Non fiction and informative -poster boards and posters -brochures Wiki pages Graphic novels Film trailers and posters -fan-made trailers on existing texts -taster/trailers for texts on a theme Short films -based on other texts -use of written here too Advertisements -static and moving -fictional, based on other texts Documentaries -non-fiction -fictional, based on other texts -English themes, research etc.

  12. Why visual texts? Text study source texts and other source texts - deepening learning -sometimes better than straight written and/or verbal -a chance to articulate learning in a different style (from exams, gah!) -further developing text understanding while creating own texts. -integrated texts and access to big concepts -excellent links with other standards /units of work.

Now time to apply… • Think about the major element of your essay. • This could be the theme (the central message or idea), an element of the plot/summary, a symbolic element (object or use of color or texture), etc. • It may be abstract, just make sure it has focus and purpose. • Begin to create your visual text!!! • When finished, you will have the opportunity to present.
