  1. Perception of ETs Throughout Human History By: Krista O’Donnell

  2. Ancient Beginnings Sumerians: • Amphibious creatures, the first being Oannes, were considered repulsive and offensive yet were intelligent and benign. • Sumerians claim that the creatures taught them about art, science, behavior, law, and architecture. Ancient Greeks and Romans: • Other worldly beings were seen as gods. • Believed the universe created the gods, instead of gods creating the universe. - Thales of Miletus (6th century B.C.) was a philosopher who assumed that other planets had earth-like conditions

  3. Greece and Rome Tackle the Issue • Other worldly beings were seen as gods, most of which lived in the sky • Believed the universe created the gods, instead of gods creating the universe. • Thales of Miletus (6th century B.C.) was a philosopher who assumed that other planets had earth-like conditions

  4. ETs in religion: • Many religions claim and accept the idea of the existence of multiple worlds, and do not fear the beings that live in them • These religions include Hinduism and Buddhism • There are even religions that were founded in the early 1950s that are alien-centric • Scientology is the largest UFO religion

  5. ETs Become Entertainment • Voltaire wrote a short story in 1752 called Micromegasabout aliens • It featured a giant alien that was 20 miles tall and could live 20 million years from a planet around Sirius who befriends another alien from Saturn. • When the aliens visit earth they at first doubt the existence of life due to how small the planet is, and then write off the intelligence of humans due to their small size as well

  6. The War of the Worlds • Written in 1897 H.G. Wells • in 1938 Orson Welles did a radio broadcast of the novel, which many mistook for an actual news report • The novel was turned into a film in 1953 • The novel presented the aliens as our enemies, which was a relatively unique approach

  7. Stop! What was going on in America at the time that caused people to feed into this new perception of “evil aliens”?

  8. Government Involvement • U.S. Air Force took sightings and reports seriously and began investigating under The Blue Book Project • The group investigated from 1947 to 1969 • Of a total of 12,618 sightings 701 of them remained “unidentified”

  9. Friend…

  10. …or foe?

  11. Homework question: If you were to create an alien film, would you depict the aliens as gods, allies, or enemies?
