  1. University Survey Policy Joy Tatusko Office of Planning, Assessment and Institutional Research Assessment Research Analyst CTLT Lunch and Learn October 16, 2013

  2. Why is there a survey policy? • Reduce survey fatigue • Increase response rates • Increase representativeness of the response pool

  3. Which surveys go to OPAIR? • Notify OPAIR of all surveys that are not limited in scope. • For example, surveys given by an instructor to her class for the purpose of classroom activities would be exempt, but surveys given to audiences beyond the classroom would require OPAIR review.

  4. What does OPAIR do with your survey? • Documents the survey, may make suggestions about timeline • Reviews the survey, may make suggestions about items • Collects analyses and action plans for University administration and accreditation

  5. Audiences and Offices • In addition to OPAIR, other offices may require notification, depending upon the survey audience

  6. IRB and OPAIR? • Surveys that are not pedagogical, not class/course/program/unit assessment, may require IRB review • See: http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/humansubjects/guidance/45cfr46.html#46.101 • Note sections 46.101b.1 to 46.101b.4, which relate directly to exemptions for research in educational settings • Example: Campus Climate Survey (required IRB approval) vs. Office of Administration Survey (did not require IRB)

  7. Summary of Steps • Obtain IRB approval, if necessary (see Pace IRB guidelines) • Give at least two weeks notice to OPAIR and other required offices • Submit digital copy of survey to OPAIR • Within three weeks of survey’s close, submit copy of results/analysis to OPAIR • Within six weeks, submit copy of action plan to OPAIR

  8. Where can we go for survey help? • CTLT for Qualtrics survey software training • OPAIR for survey design consultation • Your School/College, Provost’s Office, or University Relations for email list (for electronic distribution) • If you’re not sure what office has access to the contact information for your survey’s target audience, OPAIR can direct you.
