  1. Rye’ll Dydell &P.J. Hawkins 3hr. White Football Pads

  2. 1877 • L.P. smock invented the first protective pads • Made of mainly leather and mole skin • Had to be sewn into the uniform • Were made by sewing and quilting

  3. 1890’s • Pads were still made of leather • Pads were made much more thicker • Started to be made by big sports companies, Spalding/Victor

  4. 1930’s • Still made of leather • Made to be worn • Had laces on the front so the players could adjust the fit • A lot more protection than quilted pads and a lot heavier

  5. 1980’s • Pads were made out of plastics and other hard synthetics • Also the underside of the pads were made of foam • Made in a cantilevered design to dissipate the power of a hit

  6. Present Day • Started using viscoelastic polyurethane foam underneath the pads • On top is a hard plastic shell • Pads are layered to reduce the force of the impact • Light weight so players can still move well

  7. Present Day • Pads made with elastic adjustable straps to make the right fit • Players have max protection and speed • Some shoulder pads have pads that extend all the way down to the back

  8. Effects of Innovations • The best effect of the development of shoulder pads was that there are not as many injuries that occur • Another positive affect is the shoulder pads are cheaper and fast to make. • Since pads are made of synthetics they can just make more and more plastics instead of waiting for leather
